The visualization displays the maturity level of the World Wide Web as well as its impact in 81 selected countries.
It visualizes the Web Index for the year 2013 which was constructed by the World Wide Web Foundation. The Index assesses the web in each country with indicators from four areas: affordable access to a high quality internet, freedom and openness of the web, availability of relevant content and the impact on society, economy and politics.
The visualization allows for visual comparison of all components and indicators for all 81 countries within one view. Drivers for good results become clear as well as shortcomings. The tree layout enables to determin strengths and weaknesses in specific areas. Additional dimensions are visualized using relative sizes of the trees. They display the possible impact of the given maturity level: How many internet users does the developmental level of the web affect? And how many people in total? How high is the average income (GDP) per person in the country and does the internet have an impact on the GDP? Or does the GDP rather have an impact on the internet's maturity? The visualization does not aim at providing answers for these questions, but rather displays possible relationships for comparison and further investigation.
